TOP 10 PICKS FOR CHRISTMAS WINE HK POP–UP CELLAR 2014
Wine HK, Hong Kong’s biggest pop-up wine cellar, has just released a TOP 10 PICKS FOR CHRISTMAS wine list for its year-end consumer wine event from 5th – 7th December 2014. With over 800 wines to choose from, Jeremy Oliver – an established wine author and ambassador to the Australian wine industry has pinpointed selective wines to celebrate Christmas.
Oliver first begins by breaking down the aromas and flavors – such as fruitiness, presence of earthy minerals and oak by going through the systematic assessment of each wine, known as the “Tasting Grid”. Some covetedwines that are definitely not to be missed this year are:
1. 2009 Musella Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso – Italy
The Valpolicella’s tasting notes include a balanced flavor featuring a core of black cherry, aromatic herb, crème de cassis and wild strawberry fruit, with hints of gumdrop and smoke.
2. 2010 Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - USA
This wine exhibits a deep burgundy color with aromas of dark fruits, smoky cedar and dried herbs. Concentrated flavors of black cherry and blackberry are framed nicely by cedar and toast notes on the finish. Rich and broad in the mouth, this wine has a long finish with an expansive palate.
3. 2011 Kracher Cuvee Beerenauslese – Austria
This white wine is a highly popular dessert wine. Tasting notes are bright yellow with silver reflections, pronounced honeyed notes over attractive aromas of ripe stone fruit, subtle spices and mineral character. Nuances of juicy yellow fruit with vibrant acidity; highly elegant and balanced with a touch of salt, this wine leads to a lingering mandarin finish.
4. 2011 Guigal Saint Joseph Rouge – France
The 2011 Saint-Joseph is one-hundred percent Syrah that is aged in 2-year-old barrels. Classy all around, with notions of smoked blackberries, hung game, pepper and chocolate, it is complex and nuanced with a seamless, beautifully textured profile on the palate. It has loads of Northern Rhone character.
5. 2012 Wirra Wirra Woodhenge McLaren Vale Shiraz – Australia
The palate has a rich core of satsuma plums and dark berry fruits layered with spice and leather. Sandy tannins and cedary oak provide the wine with wonderful weight, balance and persistence that balance the fruity facets of the wine.
6. 2013 Prunotto Moscato d'Asti DOCG – Italy
An intense straw yellow in color, this wine shows a musky nose with additional notes of hawthorn and acacia honey. On the palate it is full, dense, vigorous, and elegant with a fresh, balanced, and pleasurable finish.
7. 2013 Henri Bougeois Pouilly Fume – France
The aromatic, floral and smoked nature of this Sauvignon blanc is the most dominant aspect of this charming wine. It displays its elegance, fruitiness and roundness and is very persistent in the mouth, best served chilled.
8. NV Stanton & Killeen Rutherglen Topaque – Australia
A white wine grape variety, the Rutherglen Topaque has a stunning bouquet of quince jelly, cumquats and dried fruit. Flavors of zesty lemon peel and butter menthol combine to produce a very fresh silky palate.
9.NV Dow’s 10 Years Old Tawny – Portugal
A bright tawny colour and brimming on the nose with aromas of candied fruit and toffee, this wine beautifully combines with a mature ripe fruit. On the palate vibrant nutty flavors are perfected with a balanced long finish.
10. NV Ayala Brut Majeur Bottle – France
Pale gold in color with a very fine mousse, the wine is aromatic on the nose. On the palate, it is well balanced and shows great finesse and complexity. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay bring vinosity and delicacy together in a very harmoniously balanced blend.
