KAI Izumo: A Sanctum of Serenity and Tradition designed by NOMURA Co.,Ltd

Nestled in the spiritually rich landscape of Izumo City, KAI Izumo, designed by NOMURA Co., Ltd, offers a unique blend of traditional and contemporary design that redefines the ryokan experience. This innovative approach, with its meticulous attention to craftsmanship and reverence for local heritage, combined with its location near the sacred Izumo Taisha Shrine, invites guests on a journey of physical rejuvenation and spiritual preparation.

KAI Izumo, the latest gem in the Hoshino Resorts KAI collection, reimagines the traditional ryokan experience in the ancient city of Izumo, Shimane Prefecture. Crafted by NOMURA Co., Ltd, this hot spring inn is a living tribute to the region's rich mythology and cultural heritage, offering a sanctuary for both body and soul. Nestled near the revered Izumo Taisha Shrine, the ryokan serves a spiritual purpose: to cleanse and prepare visitors for their pilgrimage to the shrine, inspired by the concept of 'Umi Iro Misogi,' or Sea Color Purification.

KAI Izumo is situated on the western side of the property, offering sweeping views of the iconic Hinomisaki Lighthouse, the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan. The inn features a book lounge, an exquisite restaurant, large public baths with open-air hot springs, and 39 meticulously designed guest rooms that reflect the changing hues of the Sea of Japan.

Crafted Design and Symbolism

Upon entering KAI Izumo, guests are greeted by a striking entrance feature that symbolizes the setting sun over the Izumo coastline. This emblem, made from finely processed steel with impurities known as Noro, pays homage to the region's historical Tatara ironworking traditions, where the finest Tamahagane steel was once produced. This entrance, which is already a popular photo spot, is a symbolic gateway to a stay filled with history, craftsmanship, and spiritual renewal.

The rooms at KAI Izumo are divided into two distinct design motifs, each reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The western-facing rooms feature indigo-tinted living areas that enhance the rich orange glow of the setting sun over the Sea of Japan, creating a calming and meditative ambiance. On the other hand, the eastern-facing rooms draw inspiration from the mysterious hues of dawn, with walls covered in locally crafted Sekishu washi paper dyed in shades of dawn blue and red ochre. These spaces capture the unique characteristics of the Hinomisaki area, incorporating local materials and colours that reflect the natural rhythm of the day.

Connecting Guests to Izumo's Spiritual Legacy

KAI Izumo has woven mythology into its design and experiences, paying homage to visitors' profound spiritual bond with Izumo Taisha Shrine. Guests are invited to embark on a purification journey, guided by the Sea of Japan. Sea Color Purification is echoed in every facet of the ryokan, from the serene outdoor hot springs to the thoughtful design elements that mirror the changing hues of the sea and sky.

Beyond its visual and cultural allure, KAI Izumo beckons guests to partake in local traditions through immersive experiences. The ryokan's tranquil garden hosts captivating Kagura dance and tea ceremony performances, offering a window into Izumo's mythological past. The seasonal menu is a celebration of the region's culinary treasures, featuring delicacies like basket clams and red queen snow crab, meticulously chosen to showcase the best of local cuisine.

A Unique Response to the Location

The ryokan's location near Izumo Taisha and Hinomisaki Lighthouse allowed it to elevate its design beyond the typical KAI brand experience. The western-facing rooms capture the majestic sunsets, while the eastern-facing rooms symbolize the dawn, creating a unique relationship between the guest and the surrounding elements of nature. The result is an immersive experience where guests feel deeply connected to the environment in body and spirit.

By weaving the mythology of Izumo and the natural beauty of Hinomisaki into the heart of the design, KAI Izumo offers a more profound, more reflective experience. It's a place where every moment—a sunrise over the sea or a meditative soak in the hot spring baths—is an invitation to pause, reflect, and rejuvenate. The inn is both a destination and a journey, where history, nature, and spirituality converge to create an unforgettable experience.

More than just a luxury retreat, KAI Izumo is a vibrant cultural ambassador for the region, providing visitors with exciting opportunities to engage with Izumo's storied history. Daily Kagura dance performances and traditional tea ceremonies further enrich the experience, drawing guests closer to the area's mythological roots. The ryokan's seasonal menu offers a refined taste of local delicacies, with standout dishes featuring the best of Izumo's seafood, such as basket clams in spring and summer and queen snow crab in the winter months.

KAI Izumo is a retreat designed not just for relaxation but also for reflection. Here, the sea, sky, and earth elements come together to create an environment that nurtures both the body and the soul. In every detail, from its architecture to its culinary offerings, the ryokan embodies the spirit of Izumo as a place where history, nature, and craftsmanship converge.

Urban Landscape: A Street Corner Blooming with Scientific Dreams

The park is inspired by high-tech innovation and focuses on the theme of "Quantum Science." It simplifies complex concepts such as atomic nuclei, electrons, and the solar system into visually engaging design elements. The design utilizes circles to symbolize balance, simplicity, and security, creating a spatial narrative throughout the park. In the middle of the park lies a central shared area representing the "Atomic Nucleus." Interactive and leisure zones, symbolizing "Electrons," are located at each end of this area. Visitors' movements link these zones, generating an energy field that mirrors the dynamic interactions of particles. Naturally drawn to the familiar circular shapes, children feel a sense of wonder and curiosity as they explore the space.

The High-Tech Quantum Pocket Park.

There is a revitalized space in the High-Tech Zone between Nankai Jingyang Elementary School and Chunmiao Kindergarten that combines innovation, nature, and community. Situated on the busy Higher Education Mega Center East Road, this previously unremarkable street corner, which spans approximately 800m², has become a lively hub of scientific exploration and community engagement. The area used to be filled with boring tree planters and uninteresting landscaping, making it hard for people to move around and not very inviting. Despite being in a great location, it was ignored and unused.

The new design has transformed the space into an exciting public area that meets the community's needs. The park now serves as a peaceful place for parents to wait for their kids, a convenient walkway for pedestrians, and an interactive playground for children to play and learn.

A High-Tech Haven: Quantum Science Meets Play

Beneath the ground are educational illustrations of the planets, connecting the small world of quantum science with the grandeur of the solar system. By incorporating scientific learning into the park's playful environment, science becomes approachable and fun, encouraging children to develop a love for discovery. The installation aims to intertwine scientific education with recreational activities, making learning about space an enjoyable experience for young visitors.

The park's layout is centred around a circular trajectory, drawing visitors toward the space's core. This simple yet powerful design gives rise to a three-tiered structure—outer, middle, and inner zones—each fulfilling a different purpose. The outer zone offers public seating, the middle zone offers a lush plant community, and the inner zone offers interactive play spaces.

The circular seating varies in height to accommodate people of all ages, allowing for a relaxed, pressure-free resting posture. Surrounding the seating, clusters of plant communities bring the space to life, their canopies offering shade and a softer transition between built and natural environments. These layered zones create a dynamic spatial experience, inviting exploration and connection with nature.

Sustainable Design: A Tribute to Chongqing's Spirit

The park's ecological design includes the Huang Jue Tree (Ficus virens), symbolizing Chongqing's resilience and vitality. Carefully chosen local plants surround this focal point, fostering a sense of connection to the city's landscape. Wildflower paths and herbaceous plants enhance the natural ambiance, creating an environment that changes seasons and encourages residents to interact with their surroundings.

This verdant oasis beautifies the urban environment and reinforces the importance of sustainability. With their year-round presence, the choice of plants ensures that the space remains vibrant and inviting throughout the year.

A Visual and Emotional Transformation

The park's visual appeal plays a significant role in attracting and engaging visitors. A series of circular patterns on the ground create a dynamic and lively aesthetic, bringing energy and movement to the previously static site. Inspired by the deep blue tones of the High-Tech Zone's logo, the park's colour palette strikes a balance between natural greens and striking blues—reminiscent of Klein Blue—symbolizing intelligence, hope, and the boundless potential of technology.

The playful yet thoughtful use of colour draws in passersby and sparks curiosity and joy among children. Through engaging design, the park becomes a space where scientific knowledge meets the imagination, allowing young minds to dream amidst an ideal blue backdrop.

A Corner Transformed: A Hub for Community and Innovation

What was once a nondescript street corner has been revitalized into a thriving community space. Neighbours gather here to relax, children's laughter fills the air, and the park's vibrant energy draws in the surrounding residents. The Quantum Pocket Park enhances the aesthetic and functional value of its immediate surroundings and symbolizes the High-Tech Zone's dedication to science, innovation, and public engagement.

In this transformed city corner, the pocket park integrates science and everyday life, fostering a deeper connection between the citizens and their environment. It is a beacon of the community's aspirations for a better, more innovative future—where dreams take root and bloom.

Hokkaido Ballpark F Village: A Bold Fusion of Sports, Culture, and Community

The Hokkaido Ballpark F Village is not just another sports complex; it's a unique destination that redefines a stadium concept. It's where entertainment, community involvement, and advanced design converge to create an exceptional experience. With its unique features, it's set to become a landmark that appeals to residents, tourists, and investors alike.

The Hokkaido Ballpark F Village is not just another sports complex; it's a unique destination that redefines a stadium concept. It's where entertainment, community involvement, and advanced design converge to create an exceptional experience. Developed by Artless Inc. in collaboration with Dentsu, this project transcends the traditional stadium model, forming a unified community and entertainment zone. With its unique features, it's set to become a landmark that appeals to residents, tourists, and investors alike.

ESCON Field Hokkaido is a modern baseball stadium located in F Village. It features Japan's first natural turf and a retractable roof. The stadium's design is influenced by local culture, with the roof inspired by traditional gabled homes in Hokkaido. This design element is incorporated into the branding, including the signage and logo design. Additionally, the roof structure serves as the basis for the wayfinding system, which consists of intuitive arrows that direct visitors throughout the complex.

The branding strategy, created by Artless Inc., extends beyond mere aesthetics - it embodies movement, positivity, and a sense of community. The italicized logotype and the incorporation of the star element, taken from the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters' team logo, symbolize energy and connection. This careful blend of brand elements ensures the visual identity appeals to local pride and modern, forward-thinking design.

The comprehensive visual identity (V.I.) developed for F Village includes the logo, brand colours, typography, and a uniform signage system. This consistent design can be seen across digital and physical platforms, creating a seamless visitor experience. Visual cues guide people from the ballpark to various facilities such as hotels, restaurants, and wellness centers. Using universal symbols and a consistent typographic system makes navigating the area easy for people from different countries and language backgrounds.

F Village is not just a sports venue; it's a vibrant community hub. The ballpark transforms into a year-round destination with a diverse range of amenities, including commercial spaces, glamping areas, children's play zones, and agricultural learning facilities. F Village is designed to attract many people and promote social interaction, learning, and wellness. It's a focal point of community life, where everyone is welcome and included.

The design and branding of F Village are not just about aesthetics; they incorporate practical elements that enhance the space. For instance, Artless Inc. has created a standardized numbering system for signage, ensuring that every visual aspect, from small details to significant architectural elements, works together cohesively. This system allows for easy scalability, ensuring that future developments integrate with the established design language. By blending sports, leisure, and culture, Hokkaido Ballpark F Village presents itself as a forward-thinking project emphasizing stadiums' evolving role in urban environments. It's not just a place to watch a game but a vibrant community hub that reflects Hokkaido's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and commitment to innovation. This thoughtful combination of design, branding, and community focus ensures that F Village will serve as a landmark destination and a model for future developments across Japan and beyond.

It offers an immersive journey into Japan's deep-rooted food and cultural traditions, providing a unique cultural experience. Located in the serene streets of Oku-Asakusa in Tokyo's Taito ward, Issen, designed by Takasu Gaku Design and Associates, is a unique destination that transcends the typical tea and dessert shop. It offers an immersive journey into Japan's deep-rooted food and cultural traditions, providing a unique cultural experience. Spread across a 25-square-meter space, Issen profoundly reflects Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Situated within walking distance of the bustling Asakusa Temple, Issen offers a tranquil escape for those seeking a more intentional and unhurried experience of Japanese culture, away from the tourist crowds.

The heart of Issen's philosophy lies in its tribute to the relationship between food and culture. Each dish is a curated celebration of Japan's diverse agricultural heritage. The shop's owner undertakes a personal pilgrimage across the country, visiting the fields and workshops of Japan's rural heartlands to select only the finest tea leaves and ingredients. This meticulous curation process, infused with a personal touch, brings a level of authenticity that elevates the dining experience, where every bite and sip is imbued with the stories of the artisans and farmers behind the produce.

The food served at Issen goes beyond mere sustenance—it is an invitation to appreciate the nuanced flavors and textures that have been shaped by Japan's diverse climates and terrains. The teas, sourced from small farms, are brewed with precision, their natural flavors enhanced by the care taken in both cultivation and preparation. The desserts, too, are a delicate interplay of seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on freshness and balance. These dishes are not only visually appealing but are meant to engage the diner's senses fully, from the subtle fragrance of the tea to the delicate sweetness of the desserts, creating an exciting culinary experience.

The design of Issen reflects the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, where beauty is found in simplicity and imperfection. It is a masterclass in restraint and reverence for natural materials. The earthen floors provide a tactile connection to the earth, while the natural stone counters offer a sturdy, grounded surface that contrasts with the lightness of the washi-paper walls. These walls resemble traditional earth walls but are crafted with handmade washi paper, lending the space a subtle texture that invites touch and evokes the rich tactile history of Japanese craftsmanship. The shop feels like an organic extension of the land, where every material tells a story of the natural world from which it was derived.

In the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony, Nissan encourages guests to take their time and fully enjoy the experience. The peaceful atmosphere, highlighted by a prominent, handcrafted washi light fixture, blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. The fixture, featuring a cascading water pattern, surrounds the counter area and brings to mind the calmness of a flowing stream. This reference to the outdoor, no-date tea ceremony adds a modern touch to the space, where nature is always present, even within the confines of this cozy tearoom.

The design promotes a calm, almost meditative experience, where the owner's actions and service delivery contribute to the overall aesthetic. Each movement is deliberate and filled with purpose, reminiscent of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony's philosophy of ichigo ichie. This concept emphasizes the fleeting nature of each moment and the significance of cherishing the present.

In many ways, Issen is an extension of Japan's cultural landscape. It expresses a deep connection to nature, tradition, and craftsmanship. The space bridges the old and the new, seamlessly integrating contemporary design with centuries-old practices. Visitors at Issen are not simply dining; they participate in a ritual honouring Japan's profound cultural heritage. Eating and drinking tea reflects a broader, more interconnected world.

The experience at Issen is more than just culinary; it is cultural, sensory, and deeply personal. It offers an opportunity to disconnect from the frenetic pace of modern life and reconnect with the simplicity and beauty that has defined Japan for centuries. Through the careful selection of ingredients, the mindful design of the space, and the reverence for tradition, Issen stands as a testament to the enduring power of Japanese design and culinary artistry.

Flooded with natural light and accented by digital installations, this space serves as both a gathering point and a showcase of SEMBA's visionary approach to design.

Technology plays a vital role throughout the mall, with strategically placed LED screens creating an immersive environment for events and performances. This façade transforms the mall into a beacon of expression for the local community, allowing residents to use the space as a platform for sending messages and engaging with their city in a new, interactive way. Inside, the mall's dedication to cultural preservation is evident, with features such as an SDGs Art Wall created by children, digital art by Cambodian female artists, and shadow pictures—an ancient Cambodian art form recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The outdoor spaces at AEON MALL Mean Chey are truly impressive. They provide visitors with a unique urban park in the heart of Phnom Penh's commercial district. This beautifully landscaped area includes seating areas and open spaces for events, inviting visitors to take a break from the busy shopping scene and enjoy a natural, relaxed environment. With a third-floor walking track and a kids' slide connecting the floors, the mall is designed to provide a holistic lifestyle experience.

The mall's design is built on a foundation of sustainability. SEMBA Corporation has utilized eco-friendly materials, such as recycled plastics for custom furniture, and implemented magnetically replaceable signage to reduce waste. Furthermore, the mall features a large-scale solar power system and dedicated electric vehicle parking, demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility. AEON MALL Mean Chey has already obtained EDGE Green Building certification and is working towards securing Green RE certification, establishing itself as a standard for sustainable development in Cambodia.

AEON MALL Mean Chey transcends the typical retail experience. It combines technology, culture, and sustainability to create a space that not only serves as a cultural landmark but also a vibrant community hub. In the vibrant energy of Hong Kong's Causeway Bay, Weirdo Beauty stands as a symbol of the avant-garde. It is a flagship cosmetic medical center where beauty and technology come together in an awe-inspiring showcase of spatial design. The vision behind this 300-square-meter sanctuary is brought to life by the acclaimed Arti Studio Limited, which seamlessly blends aesthetics, functionality, and sensory experience with its innovative approach.

At Weirdo Beauty, Arti Studio Limited is redefining the traditional beauty center concept. They have created a fluid, dynamic space that rejects the clinical, impersonal atmosphere of typical medical centers. The design is a masterclass in spatial storytelling, where every element has been meticulously crafted to enhance the visitor's journey. Stepping inside is like being transported into a carefully orchestrated world of tranquillity and wonder, where the unique sensory experience will leave you intrigued and excited.

"The design is based on the thoughtful manipulation of form and texture. The walls are covered in a coral-toned textured finish, creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere. This carefully selected colour palette reflects Arti Studio's deep understanding of how colour can influence mood, reinforcing Weirdo Beauty's commitment to a holistic, sensory experience."

The studio's skill in creating fluid forms is evident in the sinuous, organic curves that shape the space. These curves create a sense of continuous motion and flow, breaking away from the rigid lines usually found in medical environments. This visual language is not just decorative; it emphasizes a core philosophy: beauty is an ever-evolving, dynamic concept.

The interior is designed to unfold like a scene from a science-fiction story, with dramatic transitions challenging traditional spatial arrangements. The reception area has a gently lit, curving tunnel that leads into the center, creating a more intriguing atmosphere. At the heart of the center, the reception lounge is a dramatic composition of architectural elements. A tree-like display wall rises from the floor and seamlessly merges into the ceiling, symbolizing the integration of nature and futuristic design. An elevated spline screen defines seating and corridor spaces, while artificial skylights create a diffused, natural glow, enhancing the tranquil mood.

Arti Studio Limited is committed to creating a multi-sensory experience which extends into the lighting design. Every light fixture, from the skylights to the adjustable ambient lighting in the waiting area, has been crafted with versatility, offering a setting that can adapt to any event or guest need. This is where design goes beyond aesthetics, becoming an emotional and psychological tool that shapes the visitor's experience.

As you move further into the space, the design continues to impress. Before reaching the treatment rooms, an observation tower-like corridor reveals floor-to-ceiling windows that frame breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour. This architectural choice creates a dramatic interplay between the built environment and the natural world, highlighting the center's connection to its surroundings. The curtain wall design offers unobstructed views and allows the changing light and weather to interact with the space, ensuring that each visit feels entirely unique.

The treatment rooms, designed for maximum privacy and comfort, represent the culmination of your journey at Weirdo Beauty. Here, Arti Studio Limited combines modernist design principles with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring that the space is not only functional but also transformative.
