When did you last kiss the clouds? Charles Chau Exhibition
On show in the Tokyo exhibition will be an intermix of Charles Chau’s Fafa 123 - the various sub-phases of the artist’s playful colours over the last 5-6 years. The repeated syllables ‘Fa-fa’ are chosen as they mimic infant learning and baby talk with repeated sounds ‘fa’ being the Cantonese pronunciation of ‘flowers’
The global Covid challenge has not been easy on any one of us, irrespective of individual difference in wealth, gender, religion, or race. It promoted us to question the fundamentals of almost everything - asking the many how’s, why’s and what’s that we might not have the time or capacity to reflect. yet, it is also during such weary moments when we have nothing better to fall back onto that we need to adhere even more strongly to our core values and beliefs.
Of mankind. Of being human.
Flowers blossom and wither, clouds form and fly. Not every day is a sunny day. But when winter’s gone, spring comes again. The world has never stopped being beautiful - we just need to take the time to look.
When did you last kiss the clouds?
“I started Fafa years ago as if I was a 5-year-old playing innocently with colours on his canvases. Obviously, as days, months and years passed, the little one has grown up - some would say, just a bit! So, presented in this exhibition is a faithful record of what the child has grown up to see, especially given the unpredictability of the pandemic and geopolitical issues, the changing forces of 'nature' and uncertainties of life have become important parts of the 'nurture' of his imagined childhood development.” - Charles Chau.

About Charles Chau
Many art critics have described the work of artist Charles Chau as drawing inspiration from classic Chinese calligraphy, urban architecture and master painterly styles.
His latest body of work, the Fafa series, is a deliberate attempt to break away from his former signature monochromatic works, Mountain Vastness, that explored contained emotions, now liberated with unique coloured brushstrokes and freely associated forms.
Charles is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong in Philosophy and Art History. He also obtained an MBA from the London Business School. In the early stage of his career, he became the youngest editor-in-chief in the 50-year history of Hong Kong's iconic cultural magazine when he was 26. After completing graduate school, Charles first worked at McKinsey & Company and later joined MTV Networks, a Viacom company, as their Managing Director in North Asia. 18 years ago, he quitted his high-flyer corporate career at the age of 42 and began his artistic creation in modesty. Establishing an atelier in 2006, Charles was also involved in several revitalisation projects of historical buildings and architectural projects in Hong Kong and Asia.
In 2019, Charles was commissioned to paint a mural depicting Okanagan Chinese history in downtown Kelowna, BC, Canada. The documentary of the mural project Flowers & Fruits recently won the “10 Best” title of China’s Roots Film Awards 2020, presented by the Chinese Filmmakers Association. The documentary is also a semi-finalist of the 3rd Edition, Cypress Archaeological, Ethnological, and Historical Film Festival 2020. The documentary is now part of the permanent collection of Kelowna Heritage Museum.
Charles has held large-scale solo art exhibitions in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Vancouver.
